Good to know re Facetime as that should save me a bit of LD on my phone.
And I think I will buy a roaming plan, just in case, so I can access work emails (phone is locked to provider).
Three thoughts:
1) your provider will probably be willing to unlock your phone for you; if not jail breaking is pretty cheap in China
2) you can buy a decent droid to use during your trip (and others) for as low as y800
3) wifi is ubiquitous in China, to the extent that I often use very little 3g data
