Most of my trips to Canada have been by surface transport means, and most of those have been personal trips for 2-8 hours in Canada. It's quite ordinary actually for recreation, for visiting family or friends, or even for shopping in Canada back when that was a way to access cheaper goods for import back into the likes of Upstate NY.
Questions are usually about purpose of travel, occupation, and duration of stay.
When I get the "that is strange" kind of response from border control -- and it's mostly from the younger government employees and more so from the female ones than the male ones -- my urge is to respond with something like this: "As you should be able to figure out, I've done this many hundreds if not thousands of times -- and so have a huge number of my family, friends and colleagues -- without issue. Doing this seems pretty normal for a more mature audience that is not from the boonies and has a clue about what has been traditional for this neighborhood and this crossing over many decades".
