You need to re-read my post.
If you want to redeem AC Aeroplan miles for UA flights, you cannot reserve the flights with United; you must call AC and have them reserve the flights, after you have first opened an AC Aeroplan account, and registered that account with Amex so that you will be able to instantaneously convert your MR points to Aeroplan miles while you are on the phone with the AC agent.
The fact that United charges 65,000 MileagePlus miles for this redemption is irrelevant in your case: you do not have MileagePlus miles to redeem. Whether Aeroplan charges 65,000 miles, 55,000 miles, or 75,000 miles for this redemption is something that you can determine on AC's website, or on the phone with the AC agent.
Guv - thanks for the clarification. I get what you're saying - apologies, I truly am ignorant when it comes to airlines and using points (this will be my first time using MR --> airlines).
So I did what you told me and opened up an aeroplan with AC. Then I called Air Canada...was waiting for 30 minutes to get someone in reservations. When I finally did, I got this incredibly rude woman who basically said they have nothing to do with Aeroplan and they only book flights for credit cards, and to call Aeroplan - then she promptly hung up on me. Awesome.
