I'm feeling there's more to this story...
They oversold the flight (by a lot) so all the gate agents were scrambling getting the passengers without seat assignments to board. There was plenty of time to let me board, but they said I showed up too late and asked me to go away to wait over there (literally, by like yelling at me) while I was trying to board. I knew I was cutting it close, but they definitely could have let me on as they were letting the passengers without seat assignments board.
