I usually document the PIN and shred the printout. In one, I typoed it, and it didn't work. They were searching for a bit and not finding it, and then I remembered what trip I was VDBed on, gave them the record, and voila, they had it.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as DL's which are against SkyMiles number. That would make finding them a whole lot easier.
I put the relevant numbers in the notes section of my phonebook entry. As long as your phone is password protected, that should be a safe place.
