I'll say go, again (as people said above- as long as you actively keep seeking employment, you should be fine).
I would give an additional advise (from miles perspective point of view)-
Go for a Round-the-world (RTW) instead of round trip to Japan. First, you can include Japan there. Second, you can go to more places. Third, RTW is 280,000 miles in business. RT to Japan on DL metal is in theory 120,000 but in practice hard to come by (though not impossible) for less than 170,000, or more often 220,000.
I would also say it's a great way to see the world, and great return on the miles value. Use the opportunity!
So, all said- go for it!
Note: There is also a hire a flyertalker thread on the community buzz

Travel resources:
I agree with the people above/below me, refreshing post- go for it!
Japan rail pass (for trains)- link here:

Great advantage is that you can also reserve the seat if you have railpass with no extra charge (that's an additional fee if you are local of up to sometimes 3,000 yen or more).
RTW planning-
Jenny is doing her 8th RTW now on Delta skymiles, you may want to follow on twitter or on her website
