What are the laptop and router involved here?

If the router, laptop and Nexus 7 support different draft versions of 802.11n, it may cause conflicts.

Try and force everything to connect using 802.11g (54 Mbps) standard. The easiest way is to force the router to accept only 11g connections, and all your wifi devices will fall back to that standard.
