If you book an AA codeshared flight,
it is as if you were flying AA in terms of miles earning; that is guaranteed and documented on aa.com, in accordance with
this chart.
There are ways you can use AA miles to upgrade on BA and IB, iirc. There are some good threads here describing the terms and with links to the proper pages on aa.com, as well as selecting seats on BA and IB operated AA codeshares.
As to your original question, you may be able to access seats if you can get the PNR AA uses for your itinerary by calling AA reservations.

Also mentioned,
1)that if use AA marketed/but other operator, would get 100% miles plus elite bonus etc. This is not guaranteed if book with Iberia or BA marketed flight.
2)that the only way to use earned upgrades or bought upgrades is on AA marketed AND operated flight
