Just a data point since before going on the trip, I was quite discouraged by a couple posts in this thread and believed using my card would be quite the hassle.

Spent a couple weeks in China and used my Discover card wherever UnionPay was accepted. Usually I ask them if they accept UnionPay, then hand them the card and say there is no PIN. Went smoothly every time.
