Virgin booked me on a flight but gave me an invalid ticket - compensation?

To keep this brief I was bumped off a flight from cun-lgw. I accepted the compensation and they gave me a ticket the next day to fly from Cun-fll-mia-lhr
The cun-fll was with Jetblue. When I went to check in, Jetblue refused to accept the ticket virgin gave me because it was a paper ticket. I (and the jetblue rep) tried to contact virgin but nobody was in Cancun until the following Tuesday (it was Saturday). The only option I had was given was to purchase the ticket myself or wait until Tuesday to speak to somebody. The checkin agent (who's company worked for Virgin in Cancun) said that virgin would compensate me and refund the ticket price as it was clearly their mistake.
I have emailed virgin and they say they are only prepared to refund the flight costs and that is all. What are my rights here? What compensation should I get. They stranded me in Mexico and refuse to acknowledge it.
