My wife and I are due to fly from London to Melbourne with Etihad next week. We currently have enough miles to upgrade one of us in the Abu Dhabi to Melbourne leg. What are chances of the other person getting a free upgrade to business? Given we are both Etihad guest sliver and I’m close.ish to gold. Slim, I'd say. Plus I'm not sure if you can upgrade just one person when there are two on your PNR.
DO you have an American Express Gold or Platinum card? If so, look at moving your MR points to EY and upgrading both of you. If you don't have an Amex card, then as you're travelling next week this won't work for you as you don't have time, but there's a pretty simple way to get 52000 EY miles for almost no cost.
