Those airports apparently have the capacity to handle more long-haul flights... could it be that there just isn't that much demand from the regions (sorry STN) to fly direct to HKG?
STN is not a regional airport. Where the current prob would exist would be due to lack of services, connecting onwards for those whose destination is not London becoms an issue.
Flying out I do my best to avoid LHR but the lack of services can cause a need to use it ; e.g. not many daytime transatlantic services to london other than LHR
