Luxury boutique hotels sought in Philippines (other than Amanpulo)
I visited the Philippines around 3 years ago and stayed at:
Makati Shangri-la
By far the best hotel during this trip.
Rooms might look a bit outdated but everything was in excellent condition. We stayed in a basic horizon floor room. Did not use the lounge but received great service. Arranged for a pick up from the airport and when we arrived at the hotel someone from horizon club welcomed us by name and took us directly to our room. Breakfast buffet at the hotel was the most amazing I have ever had. Pool is small but again we received great service there with good food.
Alona Palm Beach, near Bohol
This is not a luxury hotel but solid 4-star in my opinion. Hotel was owned by a Swiss couple then closed shortly after we left due to a wage dispute. I think it's now open again under a different name. Hotel has around 12 bungalows, nice Pool with direct Beach access. Very nice garden and extremely clean rooms. Staff were okay but again this was not a 5-star Hotel. Food was mediocre actually boring and very Swiss.
Abaca, Mactan Island
This hotel was a major letdown. Expected so much. They pride themselves in offering world class service. It was not like that when we were there. Biggest problem was that staff showed some kind of attitude. We arranged for a transfer from the port in Cebu to the hotel. Car was from Shangri-la Mactan resort with driver plus our butler or whatever they call it. Outside temperature was more than 30 degrees but inside the car it felt like 18 degrees so we told them to please turn the aircon off. Then this guy from Abaca had the nerve to argue with us about that. In his opinion temperature was perfectly fine because of the heat outside. Similar to this was the snorkelling trip. About half an hour before we left I told to a staff member that I also need googles and a snorkel. Staff member was irritated and told me that I should have said this earlier but eventually organised it. Hotel is on a very small plot. Next to the hotel is a big microtel hotel and on the other side is a big holiday home. One night they had a big party with loud music all night and even with closed windows we could hear it very well. I cannot remember about the food. All in all did not feel welcome at Abaca. Be aware that hotel receives great reviews on tripadvisor but I know for a fact that they deleted several negative reviews in the past.
Shangri-la Boracay Resort
Very big and impressive resort. In my opinion it is to big to offer good service but I still liked it. Great pools. Beach is manmade. Food nowhere as good as at Makati Shangri-la. We stayed in a Pool Villa shortly after it opened. Be aware that most villas offer almost no privacy. Had a very bad experience at the spa and with our final bill as we used pre paid dining and spa credits. We eventually met the GM and he waived our Spa treatments of around $500. I personally would not bother with the island of Boracay. I never left the hotel because the island has literally nothing to offer.
Sofitel Manilla
Worst of all the hotels stayed on the Philippines.
Stay away from this place no matter how good the offer seems. Bad service on all levels.
