Birmingham Airport is a 1hr 26 min direct train journey from Reading, whilst Southampton Airport is just 45 mins away. And anything that can be done to improve connectivity from East of London (Southend, Manston etc) would be a boon.
The idea that places like Southend or Birmingham airport are even remotely an alternative for a big hub like LHR, with its facilities, destinations and connections, is surely very silly indeed?

It's a bit like suggesting that you get rid of all big trucks and replace them with Citroen Berlingos.
