I know the RC Naples and RC Sarasota are both close. We've stayed at both these before but were hoping for something on one of the islands.

I'm not sure sanibel island provides luxury accommodation. It's more of a condo rental location and the few "inns" are far from this board's standards when it comes to luxury. Moreover, most condo resorts are huge so you won't find there "boutique" service.
If you're still inclined on Sanibel, i've tried the sundial resort for a family holiday (three bedroom condo). It's comfortable but definitely not a luxury option.
