However, I did try it again, this time using my SunTrust checking account and it looks like it will work after the trial test deposits to Amex are credited and confirmed by me.
Although SunTrust made two small ACH direct deposits, they still DENIED my request to use American Express Centurion Bank for outbound transfers. Got this message when I logged in:
We are unable to verify the ownership of the American Express Bank, Checking, XXXXXXXXX89XX. If you would like to use this account for transfers please call Customer support at 800.382.3232.
I'm not going to bother calling Customer Support.
