That could make sense. I always assumed it was 50% off the full Y, and then got confused because by that logic, an E fare flight should be upgradable. Should your theory be true, though, this statement of yours doesn't mesh with my experience:

Every single time I booked, or considered booking a ticket via the Asiana website, every fare including M was listed as "upgrade: not permitted" under the fare rules. If all of those flights were discounted 50% under the normal fare price, then I've never actually seen the normal fare price before, no matter the season or weekday.

Or do you think the website is wrong? I've never tried actually upgrading any of those fares. I assumed the website was correct (and now that I think about it, why would I ever assume the OZ website is right about anything?). What fare codes have you upgraded in the past?
