If you look at a map of Rome, you want to be staying (in my opinion) west of the Colosseum and east of the Tiber.
my god, a poster with a bit of common sense. your reason for that choice is excellent. i do not know the place you are staying. i would recommend a cab every time you will have over half an hour walk(couple km) if you want to see specific sites. if you just want to see rome walk a bit more.
