The Outback: Adelaide to Alice Springs. 3100 km in 9 days [See post 24 for summary]

Posts 1 - 23 deal with my planning and guidance from those who helped. The summary is in post 24.

We've traveled to the main cities in Australia. I've been to Ayers Rock and Alice Springs. I enjoyed it enough that I want to take my husband. This time, I want to add Cooper Pedy. Another FTer considered it the highpoint of his 30 days in Australia.

I'm in the very initial stages of research. Is there any way to fly to Cooper Pedy other than www.rex.com.au from Adelaide? The airline has one flight a day six days a week. Flights were $234 per person in coach for the day I checked. I don't need to fly from Adelaide should there be another option.

Once in Cooper Pedy, how do I get to Ayers Rock/Uluru? I've driven from Uluru to Alice Springs, and would anticipate doing the same again.

Distances are long, but would it be easier to rent a car in Adelaide and drive? If so, how ferocious are one way drop charges between Adelaide and Alice Springs (for example)?

Is there anything else I should see in this part of the country?
