UA does not provide upgrades for free for *G;
The chances of getting an op-up is very rare and it is unlikely to be a *G
There is a chance you will be offered to buy up to first class; we have heard of many cases where the prices are much less than what the real upgrade should cost. It is known as TOD's (tens of dollars when in reality the cost should be hundreds of dollars per flight/segment).
