For me its always the suit jacket with a thermal T-shirt underneath the shirt. This works well and I have used the thermal as a bed-T when travelling light. I also carry a micro-brolly for particularly wet/snowy locations to keep dry.

I think handing the 'ageing' jacket to a Charity shop or homeless person is a great idea.
