For some reason the lounge agents don't recognise this probably due to the way the domestic boarding pass scans on the computer. As you are having a stopover of +24 hours in London you won't be in possession of the CE boarding pass so you have no proof of onward travel.
U is a Club redemption bucket, and nothing gets away from the fact that only J & Y (not U) fare buckets are Business UK tickets, and hence have lounge access, when travelling on UK Domestic services. There is where the confusion comes.

I totally agree with you that MMB will see the U fare bucket, and make the assumption that the ticket holder has lounge access at the relevant airports. But it doesn't understand the distinction between shorthaul, longhaul and UK Domestic flights.

But something (to me) doesn't add up - and BA should be making quite a firm statement on this, largely due to the attractiveness of the RFS offering and the number of people coming on FT with these queries.

Frankly, I think U on a UK Domestic should give lounge access, however, in reality I can see why it is often not. It is quite a simple distinction for a Lounge Agent to determine lounge access at, for example, GLA: Any passenger with Prem/GGL/Gold/Silver BAEC card (or relevant OW card), or anyone with a ticket in either the J or Y fare bucket. U is not a fare bucket that grants lounge access on domestic services.
