If you bought your ticket on united.com, you probably have to pay a fee to change it. If you bought it from consolidators in the US/Canada, sometimes the tickets they issue actually are less restrictive than UA-issued tickets - especially on the return.

I would guess the best option might be to call UA's local office to see if they can help.
