Why would you book a J award for Y availability? Was it available one way but not the other? Are you looking for both directions? USA to Australia is almost impossible while there is limited availability Australia to USA in economy and premium economy. Check Cathay - good availability HKG-MEL-HKG if you can connect it with the USA-HKG legs.
