Virgin v's United means the answer is a little different, but it's a good starting point.
Personally if it's on the one ticket I'd do it. If it's on separate tickets I wouldn't risk it.

There's the rub. I've walked in my front door at home 20 minutes after the plane door opened. I've also spent over an hour in line at immigration. Thankfully SFO is generally on the shorter side and better than some other airports, but it can still vary.
It also depends a lot on where you sit (rear of the plane means you're slower to get off and more people in front of you), and what gate you land at (further away means a longer walk, but gives you more time to pass people from your own flight as you walk!)
