The feet are angled towards each other. However, talking and passing stuff are done with the other end of one's body, and in this region the middle seats are well separated from each other.
The space separating the seats is used for the footwells of the seats in the row behind. Many airlines use "nesting" strategies to pack tapered J seat areas (narrower at the feet than at the shoulder) as tightly as possible into a given space. This particular strategy is different from those used on other airlines (e.g. BA, EY) where the middle seats are good for couples.
