Because I understand how badly one wants to stay with their young children, I always move if asked. And depending on the stress level of the FA (he/she doesn't want to have to take care of an unattended child or have irate passengers), I've found I often get thanked heavily during meal and drink service. I even once got a second seat switch into J after doors closed as a thanks.
Generally, I do as well. Most people I suspect would swap if asked and presented with a reasonable trade (not a last row middle seat for an exit row)

Flying BA, I received an op-up because they wanted to seat a family and needed my seat. Win-win for both parties ^

True. I guess I don't take issue with asking another passenger with the expectation that if they say no, then that is how it will be. Additionally, if you have the aisle and window, even if someone chooses to stay middle, you are very close to your child - which should be better than being separated by several rows.
