Avoid Miami.
My experience in Miami at 4pm arriving from Cancun : Plane to immigration can take up to 30mn. Immigration non-US line can be up to more than 2 1/2 hours. Customs line (big big mess), almost an hour. And then, you have to go through security again, if no Priority, oh, well 30mn ???. From the international arrivals to the other gate can take up to almost an hour !
This mean no less than 4:30 minimum connection to plan. Believe me.
Yes, to transit in Miami you would save time in Nyc, no customs & immigration.
Cozumel is ok to go to Playa del Carmen. But no time saving to Cancun.

When did this happen to you? 2 1/2 hours to get through immigration?? The worse I ever had was approx 1.5 hours to clear immigration but that was about 10 years ago in the old immigration area, lines started as soon as you came off the escalator --- ended up missing my connection too.
Agreed with the others that JFK's immigration/customs for AA is much better since there is less international traffic compared to MIA.
