OP - in my experience, your situation seems like an anomaly. On a recent flight with a stellar crew, they served me and my seat mate three pre-departure drinks. More times than not I've had to cut them off from serving me more and have periodically gotten the "are you driving when you land" question, which seems perfectly reasonable to me.
