Unless you are saving a seat considered primo by some, such as bulkhead or exit row (which an 11 y.o. cannot occupy anyway), virtually no one will object to you holding a middle seat, especially behind the exit row.
No one is going to object to an early boarder saving a middle seat anywhere behind the exit row.
