Similar situation here. We're arriving on CX at 10:15PM in a couple weeks and are catching the early morning train to Polonnaruwa. We decided to book a cheap hotel south of the airport, and will arrange for a taxi to Gampaha in the morning where we'll catch the train (instead of starting from Colombo Fort).

Any of our experts see any problems with this plan?

Should we be concerned about getting train tickets just before boarding (since they don't allow internet reservations in advance)? How much time should we allow for getting the tickets?
