Other fares have an additional charge for each stopover, I've seen $150/stopover mentioned. Sometimes one stopover is free, additional stopovers are charged (e.g. this one: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/19991995-post85.html ) Sometimes stopovers are limited to X days (I've seen 10 day max stopover)

If you can't do a stopover you might have to make your open-jaw "wider" (if you know what I mean) i.e. fly out to JFK on your open-jaw, then made your own way around the US on separate tickets, then fly back from LAX on the return leg of your open-jaw.

Or, if you're really die-hard, fly yourself all the way out to LAS or LAX, via JFK, then squeeze in a quick one-way TP run to SJU (LAS-LAX-MIA-SJU), then positioning flight back up SJU-JFK. After that, you'll need a holiday
As this is intended to be our holiday, I think I'll be avoiding any pure TP runs! Just trying to make best use of my itinerary, without going out of the way. Although it is interesting to see all these various options ^

With regards to the stopover, does ITA Matrix let me check this (via some fancy search syntax), or would I need to try booking via the carrier's website? We were only planning to be on the east coast for around 6 days, so hopefully we'd be able to fit inside a stopover limit.
