Well it was in preparation for when BA removed a crew member, so maybe around 2009, but I can't be sure but around the same time that food disapeared in some ET cabins and was replaced with snacks, I think but my memory is not what it used to be!!
It just would not be achievable unless the crewing levels went back up ( and that just wont happen) as on a 319 we often only have three crew now. We have to cover the door areas while boarding is taking place and so combine that with all the extra hand baggage we have to try and secure, it just is not possible anymore.
Hot towels have returned but we are supposed to do these after takeoff for the same reason but of course if there is time on the ground, crew do do these on the ground sometimes as it means we can start the drinks and food faster after takeoff.
