You are not confused. As others have pointed out in other threads, the web upgrade list includes HK's (people confirmed on the flight waiting for a seat assignment in Y). I believe it also includes standys. So if ther was a way to figure out how many listed on the "upgrade" list were HK's, then look at the number of unassigned seats in Y, you could get a pretty good idea if the flight is oversold.
