One advantage of the multi-ride tickets is that reservations are not required for travel. With a ten-trip ticket, you can use any non-Acela train (with a handful of exceptions). You do not have to call to reserve your seat. You are not tied to a specific train and time and possible fare increases if you have to change trains at the last minute.
