It will be interesting to see what your colleagues' experience with this has been....do report back. Absent of positive data points on this right now.....

I think a company name or your title with "Media" in it will red-flag the visa application and may cause a denial, even if your actual function is not that of a journalist. You can control what you put on your application by slightly altering company name or your title a bit and omitting that word. But if the complete name/actual title is on the invitation letter, you could still have a problem. We don't know whether Embassies/Consulates are reading or not--it may be thorough these days or it may be random, depending on exactly where you are applying.

See what that invitation letter looks like when it comes back. Rather than apply with an iffy invitation letter and risk a denial (which would then create the beginnings of a trail you don't want to have!), I'd take a step back, risk a bit of embarrassment, and ask for a new letter to be issued (altering their model to minimize any new effort on the Chinese company's part). Or as mnredfox says, go for a tourist visa which you can get with plane tickets and accommodation bookings instead of an invitation letter...if your company policy allows it and if your business activities in China will be either not extensive and/or low profile.
