To add what Qatar SHOULD have done was provide my grandmother with the boarding pass as she had a confirmed seat. Then advise us of the overbooking situation, offer compensation if she would agree to be a volunteer (do this with everyone), if she agreed to volunteer from the start then make alternate arrangements. If the flight still remained oversold then they could involuntarily bump her based on the criteria the air carrier has (checkin time, cost of ticket-awards being the least cost) and then offer compensation. My point is that the rules are there for a reason. Air carriers can overbook (I agree its a business, they need to make money) but they have to follow the rules. I'm kind of glad we have these rules, I know the EU rules are more strict.
