I sometimes carry water bottles in checked luggage to/from USA, especially on trips to India. Never had issues.

I feel the same way. Strictly, sure, stuff in the lounge is for consumption in the lounge. However, I have never seen an issue with taking a few small items with me, perhaps a bottle of water and a cookie, muffin, or bag of chips. It really shouldn't matter to BA if the water you're consuming on board came from the lounge or the aircraft.

4 bottles of water though would seem a bit much to me. In fact, more than one of anything, unless it's really small, would seem a bit questionable.
