It would be an excellent idea to make a list of all the places you want to go, then go to each major airline's website and see how many miles it would take to go there.

Then compare against how you can earn the miles (credit cards, flying, etc.)

You'll also want to spend time in each program's forum here, learning the practical details of each program and airline.
