I have used this once (with PP card), in slightly odd circumstances in which I was connecting from a FlyBe flight (South Term) to a an EZY flight (North Term) that had not opened for check-in. Was much nicer than the miserable alternative means of passing an hour or so landside on that occasion.

But obviously, if you have alternative lounge options, these are likely to be preferable!
