True. Besides the risk of being stuck with a big payment (depending on your billing cycle), that's certainly a possibility.

I wonder about the bonus Avios though. Citibank can adjust the balance accordingly just as they do with refunds during the course of the year. Would they get BA to do the same thing? Would BA do it?

That incentive was as good as any. And it's the only partnering FFP I have an account with, so the choice wasn't that hard!
