Facebook makes money through targeted ad sales. If you tell them not to sell your info and they do, I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

Whether you leave Facebook open or not has very little impact on privacy. Browser windows can't generally communicate with each other. The reason you see your Facebook profile photo and a comment box on many websites is that those sites use Facebook's API to provide identification and commenting features. Nobody is tracking you. If you don't like it, then browse the web exclusively in Incognito mode. Or, delete all your cookies when done using Facebook.

The level of paranoia here is really astounding. I thought I was paranoid!!
Fairly certain that I'm one of the most paranoid people on FT and I have private browsing on as default, as well as Share me not, NoScript, ....... Plus, HTTPS everywhere, Blocksite etc. add-ons for Firefox. I do however have a facebook account but not under my name (friends know who I am) and with an email account set up specifically for facebook.
