This is denied boarding if there ever was one.

I am betting the OP flies little and likely zero on southwest because he didn't seem to understand the process.

With him having a 3 yr old he should have been given the option of boarding between groups A and B....if he was given the proper boarding pass.
I fall here. The OP checked in for the flight in time-but was not given a boarding pass. The max number had been distributed.

Then what is the policy? Does WN fill the plane and call standbys if valid BP's do not board? This didn't happen here. The OP NEVER had a seat on the plane. This is the opposite of what we usually hear. "I have a BP and they gave away my seat because I was one min. late..."

This seems like a clear case of IDB. The OP couldn't have gotten a seat no matter what.

OR-were they immediately supposed to check in at the gate counter at arrival of gate to officially become a standby to claim their rights? If so, that changes things a bit. But, I think they should be on the standby list as soon as they get the security pass as the check in counter.
