AA will do this for an EXP for the same reason it oversells in the first place. It's a heck of a lot more profitable over the long haul to seat the full Y pax and bump the el cheapo even if there are no volunteers.

This is a great benefit in a genuine crisis. Full Y can be as much as 10x the cheapest seat on the flight, so we're not talking about chump change.
