Unfortunately, I think we are dealing with a 23 year old little girl here--breaking down and crying over the problems isn't how an adult should react to what happened.
I do think some compensation is due because of the improperly-handled ticket but that's about it. She's lucky the bag didn't get abandoned in LAX--she chose to abandon her bag and you're not supposed to separate from your baggage.

I do want you to understand that you are seeking sympathy from a community of people who fly 100K+ miles a year. What happened to your daughter happens to use often enough to were it barely phases us. A delayed flight made your daughter miss her connection, so she was rebooked. How the heck does she do if she's late driving somewhere if in traffic or detour?
And even those of us who don't fly that much (I used to be a 25k/yr flier, now it's half that) understand that it happens. Sooner or later you'll misconnect or the like. With that insane connection time it's going to be sooner.
