If you don't find flight redemptions to be worthwhile, chances are you'll find non-flight redemptions even less so.
I think he's saying that he values miles at, say, $0.01/ea, and 50,000 miles works out to be $500 in value. And a r/t that he's looking at might only be $280 or whatever to purchase a LUT fare.
