America & especially Canada which I read recently has one of the highest percentages of "non-cash" transations, debit & CC, at almost 75% with almost half being by debit alone. IIRC the article said Japan was to the other extreme at approx. 75% cash for all commercial transactions.
I literally go weeks without paper bills in my pocket here but will have to adjust for my upcoming trip to Tokyo.
It's different though as Interac is a not for profit organization and fees for that are 15 cents or so which is fair considering the risks with cash (counterfeit, time it takes to count, giving out change/waiting for customer to pay a desired amount.)
