Some of the Japanese restaurants I frequent give me small discounts (usually around five or ten percent) in appreciation of my business and because I always pay in cash. In fact, the chef of one sushi restaurant with whom I am friendly told me that he is charged a ten percent commission by some credit card companies.
10%???
In YVR my boss has an OK rate of 2.5% for CCs
In HK the rate is about 3% or so
In mainland China most of the rates are also lower (although in their defense it is processed through unionpay if it makes a difference.)
What makes Japan so uncompetitive?
