Date/time changes include carrier changes. As long as the exact routing remains the same, you may change at will and only pay tax and fuel fine differences (and get refunds if lower) plus any reticketing fees imposed by whomever issued your ticket (none if AA issued it).
You may switch from an AA coded BA flight to an AA coded AA flight without problem (same for switching from any carrier's code to any other's.)
Layovers make no difference except for tax issues (e.g., when departing from the U.K. in a premium cabin you must pay a hefty tax unless it's a connection). No need to wait until the trip commences for these sorts of changes.
Note that this is specific to the xONEx product. The xCIRCxxxx product has different and more restrictive rules. I've not used the xGLOBxxxx product yet but I think it has rules very much the same as the xONEx product.
