I like to leave closed accounts online for an extended time just in case I want to go back and check something - because once you remove them you would not get them back for online viewing.
I returned something paid for a while ago on a card that I cancelled. Having the card still online was a big help in verifying the credit went through as planned (I didn't even remember what credit card was supposed to get the credit).
